Adria Richards’ Silence Speaks Volumes

It’s been 6+ weeks since Adria said anything to anybody. And I’m pretty wreak about it.

If you don’t know who Adria Richards is and why her not speaking to anyone is a problem, well, allow me to recap.

On March 22, I wrote this blog post about Adria Richards. If you have no time to read it, here’s a rundown: Adria basically heard a private joke at a tech conference, made it a public matter, which resulted in the offender getting fired. However, because she’s Black and a woman, she was cyber-bullied by a LOT of men (and a lot of females who claims to be feminists, but some don’t like “her tone” on the matter). Her blog was attacked (both in the comments section and DDOS attacked), the start up she was working with at the time fired her (because they got DDOS attacked as well) and ever since then, it’s all about who’s right and who’s wrong because there were overreactions on all parts. But unlike the case in Florida where the charges on the Black teenager was finally dropped, we lost a Black tech voice (and personally, I lost a friend.)

Oh… and what about the victim? To this day, I don’t know WHO this guy is. He’s probably got another job. Whatever the case, he’s probably recovered and his reputation is still intact.

Meanwhile, I’m not sure when she’s going to socialize again. Her last communication with me was she will talk to me again, but this was before I even knew about the news.

What I do know that her silence shows that it will always be a White Good Ol’ Boys Club. This is a clear cut example of how racism and sexism plays in favor of White men.

P.S. - My blog post on Thought Remixer’s comment section is turned off. Mostly because I am tried of defending the “Black people can’t be racist” argument they like to use against her.

Just Another Black girl.: Black people are considered one big fucking joke to you White people.

musingsofanawkwardblackgirl:

We can’t do shit can we? Anything we do is a fucking joke to you! My fucking race is one big laugh shop for you fucking Aryans. You ALWAYS have to dehumanize us, and ridicule us. If I am a strong black woman who won’t allow someone to treat me bad, I BECOME A JOKE. If I am an urban man who risk his life to help someone else, I BECOME A FUCKING JOKE. What the fuck is wrong with you people? Can we not be respected? Or are we one big fucking minstrel show show to you? Then y’all wonder why some black people will straight up clown white folks and not give two shits. Because it’s just a FEW of us, verses MILLIONS of you. If you do it you are making a joke, if we do it then it turns into reverse racism or some shit. Shut the actual fuck up.

The troubling viral trend of the “hilarious” Black poor person
May 7, 2013

Charles Ramsey, the man who helped rescue three Cleveland women presumed dead after going missing a decade ago, has become an instant Internet meme. It’s hardly surprising—the interviews he gave yesterday provide plenty of fodder for a viral video, including memorable soundbites (“I was eatin’ my McDonald’s”) and lots of enthusiastic gestures. But as Miles Klee and Connor Simpson have noted, Ramsey’s heroism is quickly being overshadowed by the public’s desire to laugh at and autotune his story, and that’s a shame. Ramsey has become the latest in a fairly recent trend of “hilarious” black neighbors, unwitting Internet celebrities whose appeal seems rooted in a “colorful” style that is always immediately recognizable as poor or working-class.

Before Ramsey, there was Antoine Dodson, who saved his younger sister from an intruder, only to wind up famous for his flamboyant recounting of the story to a reporter. Since Dodson’s rise to fame, there have been others: Sweet Brown, a woman who barely escaped her apartment complex during a fire last year, and Michelle Clarke, who couldn’t fathom the hailstorm that rained down in her hometown of Houston, and in turn became “the next Sweet Brown.”

Granted, the buzzworthy tactic of reporters interviewing the most loquacious witnesses to a crime or other event is nothing new, and YouTube has countless examples of people of all ethnicities saying ridiculous things. One woman, for instance, saw fit to casually mention her breasts while discussing a local accident, while another man described a car crash with theatrical flair. Earlier this year, a “hatchet-wielding hitchhiker” named Kai matched Dodson’s fame with his astonishing account of rescuing a woman from a racist attacker. But none of those people have been subjected to quite the same level of derisive memeification as Brown, Clark, and now, perhaps, Ramsey—the inescapable echoes of “Hide yo’ kids, hide yo’ wife!” and “Kabooyaw,” the tens of millions of YouTube hits and cameos in other viral videos, even commercials.

It’s difficult to watch these videos and not sense that their popularity has something to do with a persistent, if unconscious, desire to see black people perform. Even before the genuinely heroic Ramsey came along, some viewers had expressed concern that the laughter directed at people like Sweet Brown plays into the most basic stereotyping of blacks as simple-minded ramblers living in the “ghetto,” socially out of step with the rest of educated America. Black or white, seeing Clark and Dodson merely as funny instances of random poor people talking nonsense is disrespectful at best. And shushing away the question of race seems like wishful thinking.

Ramsey is particularly striking in this regard, since, for a moment at least, he put the issue of race front and center himself. Describing the rescue of Amanda Berry and her fellow captives, he says, “I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms. Something is wrong here. Dead giveaway!”

The candid statement seems to catch the reporter off guard; he ends the interview shortly afterward. And it’s notable that among the many memorable things Ramsey said on camera, this one has gotten less meme-attention than most. Those who are simply having fun with the footage of Ramsey might pause for a second to actually listen to the man. He clearly knows a thing or two about the way racism prevents us from seeing each other as people.

Now that you know this is a thing, please stop sharing these memes. Poor Black people speaking candidly about various serious incidents isn’t a hilarious joke.

Jesus is not going to work it all out.

jamilahlemieux:

There, I said it. Hate me now, but I won’t stop now.

I understand that that the above sentiment is particularly controversial from a non-Christian. However, do understand that I am NOT challenging anyone’s religion. Despite my own views, I acknowledge that religion has done many powerful and transformative things across the globe and has sustained movements, people and storied institutions for which I have the utmost respect. Sure, it’s hurt many, many people as well, but that’s not the point of this rant.

My issue is with the anti-intellectual approach to the world that says if we put it all in the hands of Jesus (or God/Allah/Jehovah/etc…), everything will be okay.

I’ve heard people say that President Obama is safe from any threat because he’s a man of God. What in the Hell does that mean? Put aside any criticism of his policies and hand in any wars that have lead to the deaths of both military and civilian persons and ask what should be the obvious question: was Dr. King not a “man of God?” I won’t mention Malcolm X, because the person who believes this way probably doesn’t have the same reverence for “Mooslims”, but I digress.

Every day, I read comments in response to global/national tragedies and issues that require thought and action that go like this:

“They need Jesus!”

“God gonna work it out!”

“These are the end of days!”

“Jesus is gonna fix it!”

If it were that simple, wouldn’t the “believers” already be swimming in the milk and honey?

If Jesus was gonna “work it all out”, there would be no racism, no hatred, no violence. Trayvon Martin would be a kid eating Skittles out his pocket in his 4th period class right now; instead, he’s his generation’s Emmitt Till.

If Jesus was gonna “work it all out”, 15-year-old White kids could go watch that stupid Hunger Games movie without their brains exploding to see that characters that were BLACK IN THE BOOK were Black in the movie. Jesus would have saved their hearts from racism and their brains from a lack of reading comprehension skills.

If Jesus was gonna “work it all out”, there wouldn’t be “invisible children” in Uganda, there wouldn’t be war and famine and devistation that kills hundreds of thousands of innocent souls across the world.

I don’t think the answer to “What would Jesus do” would ever be “put it all in His hands and sit back and wait.” Seriously.

Guess what? I do believe in the power of prayer. I don’t, however, see that as an excuse to remain stagnant. We have to stop allowing people to lean on religion in order to avoid the often-difficult challenges of THINKING and DOING. God gave you a brain, a voice, the ability to change the world around you.  Use them.

The 16-year-old Jasmine Thar was shot and killed in the front yard of a Chadbourn home on December 23, 2012.  The Killer James Blackwell, 23 year old White Man, who lived across the street, says his 700 Remington Rifle went off without pulling the trigger. Jasmine was in the car with her mother and the bullet actually hit both of them. Jasmine would die from the bullet wound.  The investigation determined that the death was the product of an “accidental discharge”.  When the investigators searched James Blackwell’s (The Killer) home they found Confederate flags and NAZI memorabilia. As of now they are saying James Blackwell WILL NOT be arrested.
It think ridiculous is an understatement for how disheartening these “Investigation conclusions” are. I will say this again stemming from my last post. THE RESPECT AND CARE FOR BLACK DEATH IS NON-EXISTENT. I used to scratch my head in frustration trying to figure out how much more obvious something needs to be for them to get that it was a Race Crime. Then realized that I was naive, they can see exactly what I see but their intention was to justify the crime not to punish the Criminal. How can you possibly expect her family to accept that she was killed by some guys rifle by accident? Is this a hunting area? This is so sad and such bullshit. White people kill blacks and know that the Police will give them “The benefit of the doubt”, Unwritten Rules: When you’re BLACK you’re GUILTY until PROVEN innocent, when you’re WHITE you’re INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty. You never hear of black people “accidentally” killing white people. Why? Because Black people know the POLICE, The prosecution, and White folks won’t tolerate it. We can get Killed by Zimmerman’s or Blackwells and they courts will take the side of the killer because of Privilege. Furthermore these BLACK DEATHS ARE A CONTINUOUS PATTERN. People desperately want to feel like RACISM doesn’t exist and is a thing of the past. Some people  do not want to acknowledge racism. They ignore it and try to look at things from perspectives far from racism no matter if it’s right in their face. Lets get this clear ignoring racism and avoiding it in itself is RACIST. You are an enabler of Racism, just like someone who is aware of but quiet about another being raped, mistreated, ETC…Then people want to call you racist for pointing out some racist shit.
Black people have to stop being bamboozled by the “reports” and the media. Their agenda is always in favor of the agenda of the courts. Don’t allow their propaganda to desensitize you about something you Feel in your heart is Wrong. We cannot just pray about change ACTION is required. Blacks need to ORGANIZE and plan because this can happen to anyone of us at anytime.
I know “The Overseers” are going to come out and say “Well we kill each other everyday, why should we care about that?” Well that is true but does that justify Hate crimes by other races? Every race in the world “Kills each other everyday”  This post is about the Death of Jasmine Char and the mistreatment of her case. If you can’t understand that it’s not for you or your type of person.

I think the problem is that many people in America think that racism is an attitude. And this is encouraged by the capitalist system. So they think that what people think is what makes them a racist. Racism is not an attitude.

If a white man wants to lynch me, that’s his problem. If he’s got the power to lynch me, that’s my problem. Racism is not a question of attitude; it’s a question of power.

Racism gets its power from capitalism. Thus, if you’re anti-racist, whether you know it or not, you must be anti-capitalist. The power for racism, the power for sexism, comes from capitalism, not an attitude.

You cannot be a racist without power. You cannot be a sexist without power. Even men who beat their wives get this power from the society which allows it, condones it, encourages it. One cannot be against racism, one cannot be against sexism, unless one is against capitalism.

Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture) answering a question about racism, sexism, and capitalism.

Mountain Dew Hit New Low With Racist Ad | » Rasha Entertainment Music Industry Blog

Mountain Dew hit a new low when it comes to corporate racism. Not many people are surprised by the corporation latest actions, since their failure to drop Lil Wayne from his endorsement deal, after making crude and insensitive lyrics about Emmitt Till.
